Lakeside & Harbert

Lakeside & Harbert

The side-by-side Chikaming Township villages of Harbert and Lakeside, both located along Harbor Country’s famous Red Arrow Highway, grew out of the railroad expansion into the area, bringing summer tourism from Chicago further into the forests and orchards of Berrien County. Both towns feature the charm of cottages with broader forested vistas and charming ravines with fresh water streams, wending toward the nearby shores of Lake Michigan.

Although the trains no longer stop in either Harbert or Lakeside, the charm that brought generations to routinely visit and patronize landmarks such as Harbert’s Swedish Bakery and to become members of Lakeside’s venerable Chikaming Country Club remains in ample supply. Residents can walk the forest lanes in the morning, browse through the antique markets in the afternoon, ride bikes to dinner, and still have time to enjoy the sunset and a bonfire on the beach with visiting friends and neighbors.
